It is important that you know as much as you can about the laws
governing the property you intend to purchase, the sellers of the
property and the so-called “professionals” involved in the
transaction. For example, because there are no special
requirements or brokerage licenses to obtain, a real-estate agent
merely has to establish a Mexican corporation, obtain a work visa,
and he/she is in business.

Ownership Rights
As
you are probably aware, ownership laws have changed and purchasing
real estate in Mexico is now very safe and secure. In 1993, Mexico
enacted the Foreign Investment Law (the FIL) liberalizing land
ownership for foreign investors in Mexico. A Mexican attorney
should be hired to write up the contracts and review the terms and
conditions of the sale in both Spanish and English. As a buyer,
you should always have your own attorney and not use the attorney
of the seller.
